On August 12th MQ turned two years old, though the blog has only been on the web since Early last year, and only postings . In light of this anniversary we brought a few new surprises.

MQ in being re-branded into Conglometroid and is merging with Magatroid. We’re also working on setting up a Metroid Video Archive which will host clips, gameplay, and FMV sequences from all of the games in the series. We hope this will help bring about more fan created content as a result of easier access to the cut scenes in the Prime sub series.

On top of this we have established general pages for each game in the series and are working on compiling screen shots as well as reviews and other game data as well. Media intensive walkthroughs are also in the works but will be taking a backseat until the Metroid video archive is more or less completed due to obvious reasons.

We’re also setting up a gallery sub-site which will make viewing fan art much more pleasing. Stay tuned the next few weeks as we’ll be bringing you new articles for magatroid as well as new fan art.

As a bonus for pre-ordering the game at Gamestop buyers will get not only the tin case and art booklet, but also a t-shirt. On top of that if you order the game over the internet you’ll get an online exclusive poster along with the shirt bringing the total bonuses to four, as if three games wasn’t enough!

For recent fans of the series this is a definite pickup, and for older fans it may well be worth another look through the worlds of Tallon IV and Aether if only for the bonuses.

Any objections lady?

So unless you have been living in a hole for the past few days by now you know that Nintendo has announced a new Metroid for the Wii at this years e3 conference.

Dubbed Project M it is a collaboration by Nintendo and Team Ninja (the people behind Ninja Gaiden). Set between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion this story promises to reveal some of Samus’ back story as well as what happened to her former commanding officer Adam Malkovich.

The trailer also looks fantastic showing what the Wii can be graphically capable of. It showcases a hybrid 2D/3D gameplay style. It should be interesting to see how this 2.5D plays out. The game is expected to release sometime in 2010. Personally I’m just glad Team Ninja showed restraint in Samus’ figure.

You should also check out 1UP’s Interview with Yoshio Sakamoto & Yusuke Hayashi for more information on the game. It’s a great read aside from the mention that the game may be a bit more linear than we could hope for.

The trailer is below. More coverage to follow, in the meantime you can join the discussion in the forums.

I know what you’re thinking, and I doubt it. Now hold on, before you shoot me let me explain why. If you’re still flying under the radar the official japanese Metroid site has this little segment posted below the page. The japanese texts translates to “Follow the history of Metroid Prime from the perspective of the Space Pirates”. Now I’m not saying it couldn’t be a new game. It most certainly well could, but there are a few reasons why I believe it’s nothing more than the fluff Metroid Dread turned out to be. For one there is a considerable lack of interest for Metroid in Japan, and for something like this to be announced in a mere blurp on a Japanese website is not something I would consider a new game. I believe it is more likely that this is going to be some sort of feature for the website, much like the English version of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes website.

Prime's New Controls

On another note along with this is a new section on the site that showcases more videos of Prime being played with Wii controls. There are also a few screens cast about the site you might want to check out. Don’t get your hopes up, because personally I’d love to be proven wrong on this one, even if the result was a Prime spinoff where you control a space pirate.

I was surfing the web the other day and came across a particularly interesting blog post on Reset Glitch that expressed some of my own concerns regarding the Metroid series. According to an IGN podcast Dread once existed but was canned. I agree with Reset Glitch that the Metroid series needs another 2D game to help revitalize the series, especially for some of the older fans. A general shift in the amount of Casual games Nintendo has been producing as of late should show cause for concern on their part. When the steam dies down in regards to casual gamers purchasing these types of games how far will Nintendo go to get me to dust off their latest system? And what am I to do for a doorstop if and when that happens?

While I’m on the topic of revitalizing the Metroid series it seems that the Wii remake of Metroid Prime has received a Japanese release date of February 19th. No knowledge of a US release date yet.

With the completion of our sister site, Magatroid, settling down we now have an outlet for theoretical discussion of the series. As such we are now loosening the focus of Metroid Quarantine from Metroid News to encompass all metroid related material. We have also opted for a smoother gradient design that gives the website a softer feel.

This ranges from highlighting Metroid based projects such as fangames to showcasing Metroid fanwork. On top of this is a recent resurgence in the amount of Metroid based news to report on, as such we are opening up to the possibility of turning MQ into a Metroid Based Blog, including the opportunity for readers to make their own posts about the franchise. Don’t worry, the old Metroid Quarantine won’t be going away either, we’ll continue to report on Metroid news as well as maintain the quality of our posts, as such guests posts will face a small screening process to ensure the preservation of quality standards and copyright laws.

If you would like your Metroid based art, writing, fangame, or website to be featured then send us a line and we will personally look over it.

On top of this community influenced shift I’m proud to announce another Metroid based project that we will be unvieling in early November.

Good news for the hopefulls. Ign reports that Nintendo is porting a total of seven games from the Gamecube to the Wii with motion control functionality. Along with the two Metroid remakes DK Jungle Beat, Chibi Robo!, Mario Tennis, Pikmin, and Pikmin 2 will be making the jump as well.

There has been a bit of speculation about the possibility ever since Retro was noted as saying that they tested controls on a build of the Gamecube titles prior to Prime 3. This may prove an interesting take for new and old fans to the Prime series.
